According to the first exit polls, Ignazio Marino, the candidate of the centre-left parties, will be the next mayor of Rome. At the moment the polls show Marino with 60 per cent of the votes while his opponent, the outgoing centre-right mayor Gianni Alemanno is thought to have received 40 per cent.
Official figures now being released by the interior ministry indicate that Marino is well ahead with a 64.22 per cent of votes counted so far.
