Skiing in summer.
Sweltering temperatures in Rome make it seem impossible, but ski fans could spend Ferragosto whizzing down the slopes on Monte Terminillo, 100 km from the capital in the Lazio Apennine mountains. According to the local Mountain Team Terminillo ski club, a pristine snow slope in the Meta valley under the Sassetelli ridge has survived the summer melt. According to club president Titto Salvatori the piste, which is surrounded by rocks and fields, may have been formed by a spring avalanche.
