Student used key to carve into Trevi Fountain
Incident took place at base of Rome's Trevi Fountain.
Rome police detained a 19-year-old Italian student after she was caught using a key to carve into the marble base of the Trevi Fountain.
The incident took place on the afternoon of 21 February at the Fontana degli Innamorati, the pool to the right of the main fountain.
The student, from Aversa near Naples, tried to lose police in the crowd but ended up running straight into two plain-clothes officers. She now faces charges of damaging the 17th-century monument.
The Trevi Fountain is no stranger to visitors behaving badly, from naked dips to brawls over the perfect selfie.
