The city has announced that it will demolish the elevated tract of the urban motorway known as the Tangenziale Est. Since its inception in the 1970s, the Tangenziale Est has been a bone of contention between city planners and local residents as a source air and noise pollution. Of particular concern, traffic on elevated sections through Prenestino and Casilino runs centimeters from the windows and balconies of residential buildings. The announcement follows an agreement with state-run railway company Ferrovie dello Stato to create a joint task force responsible for redesigning the tangenziale area, which is central to both the main passenger terminal, Stazione Termini, and to the freight yards. The aim would be to reduce traffic and facilitating connection to public transport nodes. The new plan calls for a tunnel to cross under the rail lines and residential areas currently traversed by the elevated Tangenziale Est.
