Thumbs up for floating homes
A plan to build floating homes for artists and students along the banks of the river Tiber has been given an 85 per cent approval rating in an online referendum launched by the city council. The project envisages a series of floating platforms moored between Ponte Duca DAosta near the Olympic stadium and Ponte Marconi near the Basilica of S. Paolo, each containing apartments, shops and space for cultural and recreational activities. More than 100 people voted in the internet referendum, of whom 15 per cent said they were against the idea, with the rest in favour. The issues of most importance in realising the project, respondents said, were respect for the environment, the sanitation of the new homes and who would be living in them.
