Fines of €450 for tourists caught in Rome's historic fountains.
Italian police have handed down heavy fines to several foreign tourists caught frolicking in Rome's fountains in recent days.
Two young American visitors were fined €450 each for splashing around in the Trevi Fountain on 25 July, just days after a German woman received the same fine after entering the recently-restored baroque monument in an attempt to emulate Anita Ekberg's scene from La Dolce Vita.
An American tourist was also fined on 24 July after he was caught in the Barcaccia fountain at the base of the Spanish Steps.
In mid-July three bikini-clad tourists caused controversy in Rome when they were photographed cavorting in the 17th-century Fontanone on the Janiculum hill.
