Toxic waste dump discovered south of Rome
Quarry in Aprilia used as illegal toxic waste dump.
The discovery of an enormous toxic waste dump in Aprilia south of Rome has led to the arrest of 22 people, including several Rome-based entrepreneurs involved in the waste disposal sector.
Police raided the disused quarry in the early hours of 27 July following an investigation which uncovered the dumping of high volumes of toxic waste and other dangerous materials, mainly at night.
Those arrested face charges including illegal trafficking of waste and false accounting as well as various environmental offenses. Tests are currently being carried out on streams and water sources near the quarry, located some 30km south of Rome, to check for contamination.
