Trenitalia faces fines.
The regional railways catalogue of delays, dirty carriages and cancellations in Lazio in 2005 could cost them 800,000 in fines according to a report in Italian daily La Repubblica. It will be the first time that the company faces being punished in this way for poor service and underperformance. The exact amount the current total is a provisional figure based on fines incurred up until early November. Information about delays and cancellations have until now been reported by Trenitalia itself. As from early February, Trenitalia will be externally assessed using Riace technology, which can monitor the position of every train on the network in real time. Trenitalia is currently having most problems with trains running slightly behind schedule: in October for example a quarter of all trains ran over five minutes late
