Trevi fountain restoration begins

Temporary bridge will allow tourists to view fountain during restoration

A €2 million project to restore Rome’s Trevi Fountain will begin on 5 June, funded by fashion house Fendi.

Although the fountain will be covered in scaffolding, tourists will still be able to admire the 18th-century monument throughout the restoration.

A bridge will be installed over the fountain's basin allowing visitors to continue the tradition of tossing coins into its waters.

Transparent screens will also allow tourists to view the restoration of the fountain's façade, which suffered structural damage in 2012, while two giant television screens will show the restoration process along with historic scenes of the fountain.

The project is scheduled for completion by next year.
