Driver ends up more than 1,000 km off course.
An 81-year-old motorist who left his Newcastle home to make a pilgrimage to see the pope ended up in Germany after inadvertently typing "Rom" instead of "Rome" into his satellite navigation system. The pensioner, reportedly from Italy originally, blindly followed his satnav, ending up in a rural village in mid-west Germany.
On his arrival in Rom, the man got out of his vehicle to see if he could recognise any of the famous landmarks.
Ironically he forgot to put on the handbrake and his car, a Jaguar, ran over the Rom signpost.
Local police informed the man of his location before pointing him in the right direction.
