Waste not want not
"Roma non spreca" is the city councils slogan for a new campaign destined to reduce the wastage of food waste in the city and to help the needy. Romes wholesale fresh produce market, located east of the city and known as the Centro Agroalimentare Romano, is to turn a 450 sqm space into a so-called "platform for solidarity". Here all the products that vendors are not able to sell will be stored and made available to charitable and volunteer associations in and around the city. The council estimates that in this way it will be possible to salvage 8,500 tonnes of food a year - the equivalent of 13,000 meals a day worth 35 million euros which would otherwise be thrown away.
