Women’s safety handbook causes controversy in Rome
A handbook on women's safety published by the city of Rome has led to women's groups planning a protest in Piazza Trilussa in Trastevere on 17 August. 10,000 copies of the 24-page booklet have been distributed to commuters on the city's Metro A and B. A picture of a smiling woman lying on a bed of flowers is featured on the pink cover of "Handbook for your safety" which carries the subtitle: "Security, a luxury that we women want be to allowed".
Some of the booklet's advice which has caused offence include tips against carrying a bag, walking down dark streets and wearing flashy clothes. Other lines include "If you feel in danger, try to get close to a group of people or somebody who can help
