The International Festival of Urban Theatre began in 1993, and since then has been responsible for transforming city spaces into living stages, whether they are historical areas in the capital, or residential areas in the suburbs. Abraxa Theatre, which directs and organises the festival, works to make the city itself an enormous and sometimes travelling stage, breaking down the barriers which normally exist between the public and the actor, between daily life and theatrical representation. Theatre and actor merge with the passer-by and everyday life. Both principal Italian theatre companies and foreign artists take part in the plays.
