Akram Khan and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.
15 Nov 2007. In Zero Degrees, choreography by Akram Khan and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, for Romaeuropa Festival. Zero Degrees is the result of a partnership between the dancers and choreographers Khan and Larbi, the sculptor Antony Gormley and the composer Nitin Sawhney. Khan and Larbi first met in 2000; both come from Muslim families living in Europe and both draw upon this meeting of cultures in their work. However, each has developed his own, distinct dance language. Zero Degrees is born out of their desire to create work together and represents a search for an existential centre point through the exploration of polar opposites: becoming/death, light/dark, chaos/order. Creating the environment for this journey is artist Gormley, most famous for his Angel of the North sculpture. The music has been specially commissioned from composer/producer Sawhney, who has produced his own unique East-meets-West sound. This is a rare chance to see four of today
