American Academy in Rome
The American Academy holds a workshop entitled Sculpture in Rome: Rethinking Classicism and Questioning Materiality that explores the commissioning, creation and marketing of sculpture in 16th-century Rome, by focusing on the activity of artists such as Guglielmo della Porta, Pirro Ligorio and Niccolò da Viggiù.
Among the subjects being discussed is the impact of Michelangelo and Raphael; the importance of classical models; and the impact on sculpture of major historical events, such as the Sack of Rome and the Council of Trent.
