American University of Rome: The Rise (and Fall) of Demagogues

James Walston Memorial Lecture at AUR on 3 May 2018.

The American University of Rome honours the memory of its late professor, James Walston, with The Rise (and Fall) of Demagogues, a lecture by AUR visiting professor Dr Matt Qvortrup, at 19.00 on 3 May.

Described by the BBC as 'the world's leading expert on referendums", Qvortrup is an internationally recognised political scientist and an op-ed contributor for The Guardian, Newsweek, El Pais, The Times, Foreign Policy and the LA Times.

Walston is remembered as a "founding father" of the American University of Rome as well as being the university's "most distinguished, gracious and charismatic public champion."

In addition to being professor of international relations and global politics at AUR from 1990 to 2014, Walston was also a regular political contributor to Wanted in Rome since the magazine was founded in 1985.
