3-27 Oct. In these concerts for Accademia S. Cecilia Antonio Pappano conducts the S. Cecilia orchestra playing works by two contemporary composers and two contemporaries of Beethoven, together with seven of Beethoven's nine symphonies. In the first series (3-6 Oct) Pappano paired a contemporary work by Luca Francesconi Bread, Water and Salt and Beethoven's 9th symphony. In the second (11-13 Oct) works by Gaspare Spontini are paired with Beethoven's 2nd and 5th symphonies; in the third (17-20 Oct) Luigi Cherubini's Medea is linked with Beethoven's 4th and 7th symphonies; in the fourth (24-27 Oct) Giovanni Sollima's new work Ludwig Frames with Beethoven 6th and 8th symphonies .
The Sollima-Beethoven concerts (24-27 Oct) include the cellist-composer's new work Ludwig Frames, commissioned by S. Cecilia. Sollima's works include jazz, rock and Mediterranean traditions and he has worked with Patti Smith on her recordings and in live concerts. His works have sometimes been termed “post minimalist”.
