With its international film competition, a marketplace and numerous screenings of new films, the Berlinale is the Germanys biggest and most celebrated movie event and one of Europes most important film festivals. Originally started in 1951 as an American-led Cold War initiative, the festival has grown to become one of central Europes leading film events hosting such world-class filmmakers as Ingmar Bergman, Roman Polanski, Satyajit Ray, Michelangelo Antonioni, Jean-Luc Godard, Franois Truffaut and Claude Chabrol. Eleven films have already been nominated for best film eight being world premieres, including Rgis Wargniers opening film Man to Man. The festival also hosts an annual competition of "shooting stars" involving 18 up-and-coming filmmakers who have had success in their home countries. There is even a childrens film festival and a popular Forum of Young Cinema.
