The Japan Foundation in Rome, in collaboration with the Japanese embassy to Italy, the Odawara Art Foundation and Teatro di Roma, presents a bunraku theatre production entitled Sugimoto Bunraku: Sonezaki Shinju: Double love suicide.
The event is the concluding part of the Japanese Cultural Institute in Rome's 50th anniversary celebrations and takes place at Teatro Argentina on 4 October at 21.00 and on 5 October at 19.00.
The play's producer and artistic director is New York-based photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto who reworks Sonezaki Shinju, one of the most important works by Japanese dramatist Chikamatsu Monzaemon (1653-1725).
The traditional bunraku puppet-theatre production centres around the notion that by consummating their passion through double suicide (shinju), two lovers’ souls might be united in paradise.
