The Cairo Opera Ballet Company was formed in 1966, its first performance was The Fountain of Bakchisary directed by Leonid Labrovsky (then director of the Bolshoi Theatre). From that beginning, the company went on to the great ballet classics such as Giselle, Nutcracker, Paquita and Swan Lake among others. Later, the company introduced contemporary ballets by Egyptians, such as El-Somoud (Steadfastness) by Abdel-Moneim Kamel, depicting the Egyptian peoples stand in the wake of the 1967 war.
