Castelfranco Veneto. Giorgione
12 Dec-11 April 2010. A major exhibition of the life and work of this 16th century artist to commemorate the 500th anniversary of his death. Surprisingly little is known about Giorgione who was born in Castelfranco Veneto in 1477 or 1478 and died most probably of the plague in 1510. Most of what is known is based on a list drawn up between 1525 and 1543 of 12 of his paintings in Venetian collections, as well as on the often-unreliable writings of Vasari. The exhibition is divided into four sections and displays some 130 works between paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture and documents of the time. There are major works from the National Gallery in London, the Uffizi, the Louvre and the Hermitage, in this exhibition in Castelfranco Veneto, not a city usually known for major international shows.
