Cavalleria Rusticana by Mascagni and Il Cordovano by Petrassi.
23 March-4 April 2004. Conducted by Marcello Panni, directed by Stefano Vizioli, with Giovanna Casolla, Nicola Martinucci, Franco Giovine, Rosa Ricciotti, Giorgio Surian, Valentina Valente, Antonella Trevisan.
The Teatro dell Opera in Rome has chosen to pay homage to Goffredo Petrassi on the first anniversary of his death with Il Cordovano, his first opera, 23 March-4 April 2004. It is a one-act opera buffa with characters and situations that are typical of the popular idiom. Although it is a comic opera, it is particularly poignant in the present day as an evasion from the horrors of war, as Petrasso himself explained. Along with this unusual work is another one-act opera, this time a work that is well known and much loved: Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni. The conductor for both operas will be Marcello Panni and the director will be Stefano Vizioli. However the two casts will be different, with some well-known names such as Giovanna Casolla in Mascagnis opera and Giorgio Surian in Petrassis.
