30 Oct-23 Jan. The Berlin-based artist Chiharu Shiota presents Follow the Line, an exhibition of videos and sketches relating to her critically-acclaimed installation The Key in the Hand at the Japan pavilion of this year's Venice Biennale.

The installation features two boats, 400km of red yarn and 180,000 disused keys, which were donated from all over the world, including Rome.

Central to her installation is the concept of multiple recollections and overlapping memories that have accumulated over a long period of daily use.

Shiota says that keys are “familiar and very valuable things that protect important people and spaces in our lives. They also inspire us to open the door to unknown worlds.”
