Compagnia MaggioDanza.
22-30 Dec 2005. In Petite Mort and Giulietta e Romeo, choreography by Jiri Kylian and Giorgio Mancini. Jiri Kylian, artistic director of Nederlands Dans Theater for 20 years, composed this piece for the 1991 Salzburg Festival on the second centenary of Mozarts death. With six men, six women, and six foils, the stunning choreography exudes energy, silence and sexuality. Giorgio Mancini has been director of MaggioDanza since September 2003. His version of Romeo and Juliet to music by Prokofiev condenses the story into a one-act ballet with the help of simplified sets and video projections. Three mobile cubes change the space in which the dancers move, and parts of Shakespeares text are projected onto the backdrop. The dancers in modern costumes wear black or white, symbolising their rival families. The only spark of colour is given by the red gown worn by Kronos, an invented character who represents fate and takes the place of Friar Laurence.
