Compagnia Nazionale Raffaele Paganini.
8, 9 Feb 2006. In Coppelia, choreography by Luigi Martelletta. First staged in 1870, the ballet is based on E.T.A. Hoffmans Der Sandmann, and combines the romance between Swanilda and Franz with the story of the doll-maker Coppelius, whose greatest desire is to create a doll with a soul. Franz promptly falls in love with Coppelia, whom he thinks is alive, but eventually recognises that she is just a doll and returns to Swanilda, after which the final grand divertissment sees everyone reconciled. The ballet has since been revived in countless versions as it lends itself to a variety of interpretations both for the choreographer and for the dancers.
