Tharp made her professional debut with the Paul Taylor Dance Company in 1963 in a role that consisted entirely of one unlit upstage crossover, a crablike crawl performed underneath a huge striped beach towel. In 1965, Twyla Tharp founded her first company which she has sustained in various forms ever since, developing a distinctive style known for its blend of traditional training with idiosyncratic gestures, clear structure, and consistent entertainment. She has created over 70 works for her own and other companies, Broadway shows and film.
