Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss is at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa (9-19 Feb), an opera which was first performed in Dresden in 1911 to triumphant acclaim. In its narrative structure it looks to the past (it is set in 18th-century Hapsburg Vienna), but is musically more modern. On one hand there is an impressive symphonic unity, while on the other there is a lively melody. The director and creator of the scenery and costumes is Pier Luigi Pizzi, who took the production to Genoa 12 years ago.
