Divine Comedy
9, 11 Nov.
Based on the work by Dante Alighieri, directed by Eimuntus Nekrosius with his Meno Fortas Company, produced in collaboration with the Stansislavsky Foundation, the St Petersburg Baltic House Festival and the Lithuanian National Theatre.
The well known Lithuanian theatre director Eiumuntas Nekrosius, draws inspiration from Dante’s “The Divine Comedy” which he says is “like a deep lake (..), an inexhaustible source of wisdom and poetry”.
He confesses that it is impossible to convey Dante’s masterpiece through human language and theatrical devices, so he approaches the text as a fascinating and valuable treasure chest of images.
In the four-hour performance, Nekrosius stages the “Inferno” and “Purgatorio” focusing on the two main figures: Dante and Virgilio. His use of evocative scenery enables the spectator to overcome the linguistic aspect and abandon himself to the images, gestures, sounds and music which are an integral part of the show. In Lithuanian with Italian sub-titles.
