English language cinema in Rome: Detachment
Until 19 July. This excellent, hard-hitting film follows a substitute teacher who drifts from school to school where he confronts apathetic students and despairing teachers. This is not an uplifting movie by any means but Tony Kaye's directing is terrific and Adrien Brody puts in a stellar performance. It is described by Film Journal International as an "emotionally raw drama" and "independent filmmaking at its very best."
