Festival Arena di Verona
Possibly the most famous open-air opera season in the world thanks to its breath-taking setting in the ancient Roman arena, and the truly magic atmosphere of the events in programme. The festival's centennial coincides with the Verdian anniversary year which is amply celebrated with the staging of Aida, Nabucco, Traviata, Il Trovatore and Rigoletto. A Verdi Gala and Romeo and Juliette by Gounod complete the programme. Veteran star tenor Placido Domingo is bound to attract the crowds, and as always there are big names behind the scenes and on stage, but casts rotate so check the evening programme before you book and do make use of the cushions for rent at the entrance.
