Tivoli, Ostia Antica and Rome. 28 June-3 Aug 2003. An ambitious programme of opera, dance and music that unfolds in the magnificent setting of Villa Adriana in Tivoli, the beautiful Roman theatre at Ostia Antica and Romes Teatro Argentina. It opens in Rome at Teatro Argentina with Leonard Bernsteins opera Candide (28 June-3 July). The festival then moves to Tivoli with the New York City Ballet in two programmes dedicated to George Balanchine (4-5 July). The rest of the programme includes a series of recitals with Montserrat Caball, Olga Makarina and Milena Kitic, plenty of dance including a tribute to Rudolf Nureyev with Maximiliano Guerra and others (27 July), Gounods opera Sapho (3 Aug), a rich programme of chamber music and symphonic music, and a touch of drama.
