This piece marked a turning point in the career of the France-based Algerian choreographer Nacera Belaza, earning her the 2008 prize for choreographic revelation awarded by the French union of professional theatre reviewers. Belaza happened upon dance and performance after studying literature and film, both of which influence her work. Performed with her sister Dalila, Le Cri explores spirituality through minimal movement juxtaposed against a range of music, including Maria Callas, Amy Winehouse and traditional instrumental music.
