It is classical ballet at its most approachable. Based upon a story by Hoffman, it tells of one Christmas Eve, when the young Clara creeps downstairs for one of her presents, the toy Nutcracker, and finds herself at the start of a night of magical adventures as toy soldiers come to life to battle with the Mouse King, flowers dance and the Nutcracker transforms into a handsome prince who transports Clara to the Land of Sweets.
