Gomez: Nox Omnibus Lucet
17 June-14 July. Galleria Varsi presents Nox Omnibus Lucet, the first solo exhibition by Rome-based artist Gomez.
The title of the show, which translates as "The night shines for all", is a play on the Latin maxim Lux omnibus lucet, or "The light of the sun shines over everyone".
Conjuring the dramatic use of light and shadow associated with Baroque painting, the artist envelopes his subjects' faces and bodies in darkness, highlighting key features and suggesting a battle between good and evil.
Born in Caracas in 1980, Gomez moved as a child to Rome where his artistic journey began with graffiti before gravitating to street art and, more recently, figurative paintings.
Since it opened in May 2013, Varsi has firmly established itself as a dynamic and well-organised gallery that hosts regular exhibitions by noted Italian and international street artists. Located near Campo de’ Fiori, the initimate art space is completely transformed for each show, giving artists the freedom to create unique installations.
