The Palkettostage international theatre touring company presents the musical Hamlet by William Shakespeare on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 March at the Teatro Orione in Rome at 08.30 and 11.30.
Under the direction of Daryl Branch, the dialogue in the original language production has been rewritten in modern English while remaining true to the original plot.
Aimed at a high school audience, the innovative musical makes use of contemporary rock and pop music such as Lady Gaga, Pink Floyd, Cindy Lauper, Muse and U2. The choreography is inspired mostly by hip-hop and modern dance while the costumes are reminiscent of pop stars from Michael Jackson to Freddie Mercury to Eminem.
Set in the Kingdom of Denmark, Prince Hamlet exacts revenge on his uncle Claudius for murdering King Hamlet, Claudius's brother and Prince Hamlet's father, and then succeeding to the throne and taking as his wife Gertrude, the old king's widow and Prince Hamlet's mother. This heinous crime involves the whole court generating into madness, lies and corruption that leads to an end that is as tragic as it is inevitable.
