I Volti dell Alienazione
25 March-3 May. This exhibition documents the haunted faces of people incarcerated in mental institutions, and features portraits of great intensity by the important Italian painter, architect and graphic artist Roberto Sambonet (1924-1995).
On display are 40 drawings and 70 studies in pencil and ink, created by the Milanese artist between 1951 and 1952 in the asylum of Juqueri near Sao Paulo in Brazil.
Sambonet spent six months working in the hospital wards, on a personal mission to capture the complex phenomenon of mental distress but above all to convey the emotions behind the alienated faces.
