Japanese cinema in Rome
9 April-26 June. Festival dedicated to the films of the Japanese master of cinema Kaneto Shindo (1912-2012).
Both as a writer and director, Shindo was original and fiercely independent in his ideas. His portrayals of the struggles of life, particularly for women, are filmed with great dignity and depth, and are coloured by his own tenacity in the face of family bankruptcy, war and the atomic disaster at Hiroshima.
This retrospective at the Japanese Cultural Institute presents 16 of his best known movies, filmed from 1953-2003 and most of which have English subtitles, in April and June. The festival travels to the Milan EXPO for the duration of May.
