18 March-7 June 2005. Running for two and a half months at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, L'elisir d'amore (The Elixir of Love) is a love story that, uncommonly for an opera, has a happy ending. The story centres on Nemorino, a poor and shy man who lives in an idyllic village and is hopelessly in love with Adina, a rich and capricious woman from the same village. The story revolves around the idea of a magical love potion, which Donizetti manages to convert into an amusing yarn about love. Far from the falling in love because of a magic potion, the operas characters are stirred into love by love itself. A feel good opera if ever there was one. Directed by Mario Gas, with Daniele Callegari in charge of the music, soprano Mariella Devia and tenor Ral Gimnez perform the two leads, with the supporting roles varying throughout the season.
