Maggiodanza
In Les Noces, choreography by Adonis Foniadakis. The increasingly acclaimed Cretan-born choreographer created this work for the Florentine Ballet Company in 2012. It celebrates the music composed by Stravinsky and the original ballet choreographed by Bronislava Nijinksa for the Russian Ballet, which premiered in Paris on 13 June 1923 – exactly 90 years ago. Foniadakis’ version is one of many, created in the wake of Nijinska's ballet in which she weaved together emotion, Russian tradition and powerful imagery to create a modernist masterpiece. Nijinska’s work – like that of Foniadakis’ – depicts the rituals of a wedding, from the consecration of the bride and groom to the celebratory wedding feast. The emphasis is as much on the continuity of tradition within a community as on the bride and groom. The corps de ballet provides a strong counterpoint to the soloists, as they dance in unison and create bold, sculptural shapes. Teatro Comunale, tel. 0552779350, www.maggiomusicaalefiorentino.com.
