The Constant Gardener (USA/UK). Dir. Fernando Meirelles, starring Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz. A British diplomat in Northern Kenya is drawn into a world of multinational corruption following the brutal murder of his wife. The film is based on the book of the same name by distinguished crime writer John Le Carr and has two nominations (best supporting actress and best adapted screenplay) in the upcoming Academy awards.
All The Invisible Children (It). Dir. Spike Lee, Ridley Scott et al., starring Maria Grazia Cucinotta and Peppe Lanzetta. Multinational short films by seven renowned directors focusing on the plight of children in the face of adversity.
La Guerra di Mario (It). Dir. Antonio Capuano, starring Valeria Golino and Andrea Ranzi. A couple in their 40s struggle to foster a problem child.
Piano 17 (It). Dir. Antonio and Marco Manetti, starring Massimo Ghini and Elisabetta Rocchetti. Black comedy about an unfortunate criminal that won the best film noir award at the Courmayeur Film Festival.
Proof Prova (USA). Dir. John Madden, starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Anthony Hopkins. A mentally disturbed mathematician leaves his daughters to cope with his legacy.
Stay (USA). Dir. Marc Forster, starring Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts. An art history student plans to commit suicide on his 21st birthday.
The Weather Man (USA). Dir. Gore Verbinski, starring Nicholas Cage and Michael Caine. Sentimental nonsense in which a weather man struggles to control his private life at the expense of his career.
Tsotsi Il Suo Nome e` Tsotsi (UK, S. Africa). Dir. Gavin Hood, starring Presley Chweneyagae and Percy Matsemela. A violent criminal in Johannesburg finds a new-born baby in a stolen car and is forced to reassess his situation. Nominated for best foreign film in the upcoming Academy awards.
Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit La Maledizione del Coniglio Mannaro (UK). Dir. Nick Park and Steve Box. Animation in which Wallace and his faithful canine companion attempt to use their new inventions to capture a giant rabbit menacing the neighbourhood gardens.
