Romaeuropa Festival. Concert by the Vegetable Orchestra.
This orchestra began life in 1998 in Vienna. Its instruments consist of fruit and vegetables, as well as kitchen utensils (such as knives and blenders), which are used to mix the music. The sound of around 40 kilos of cucumber, lettuce, potatoes, chicory, bell peppers, aubergines and pumpkin makes for innovative compositions played on instruments made from vegetables, such as a flute made from a carrot, a saxophone made from a cucumber and a pumpkin made into a bass drum. The aroma of the vegetables accompanies the melodies. The Austrian ensemble of three women and six men only uses fresh "instruments", which have to be made before every performance to achieve optimum sound. The entity, consistency and quantity of water contained in the vegetables are fundamental to achieving optimum rhythms and melodies (21.30). Repeated 28 Oct (21.30). Teatro Palladium.
