Romaeuropa Festival: Cracking Danilo Rea

2 Dec. The 2017 edition of Romaeuropa Festival ends in style with Cracking Danilo Rea, an unprecedented event that poses the disturbing question: Can artificial intelligence replace humans in the creative process?

Hosted at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, the performance features the multifaceted artist Alex Braga and Danilo Rea, one of the world's most celebrated jazz pianists who is known for his musical improvisation.

The project involves artificial intelligence technology "learning" the ways in which Rea improvises, duetting with him through the hands of Braga who acts as a medium between the software and the public. A screen will display the streams of sounds coming from each side as Rea is assisted in his improvisation by a machine generating electronic sounds following the "human code".

The software, developed by Alex Braga with the engineering department at Roma Tre University, has the capacity to "listen" in real time to Rea's music and, within a few minutes, is able to duet and provide its own musical interpretation of Rea's performance.
