Roscioli. The highly impressive deli counter to the front boasts an array of 300 cheeses and 150 meats. On the shelves opposite you will find oils, sauces, pastas, vinegars and canned foods. Bottles of wine line the wall beside the seating area to the back, where you can enjoy the freshly-prepared food. Next door is the newly-opened but already hugely-popular Roscioli Caffè. Via dei Guibbonari 21/22.

Galleria Lorcan O'Neill. This well-established centre of contemporary art is located in the converted 17th-century stables of the Palazzo Santacroce, and can be accessed through a courtyard with a beautiful stone fountain depicting Venus. The gallery represents internationally-acclaimed artists such as Jeff Wall, Kiki Smith and Tracey Emin. Vicolo Dei Catinari 3.

Miky Shoe Shop. It can be surprisingly hard to find shoe shops for children in the centre of Rome. This one-stop-shop stocks a range of brands such as Converse, Sketchers and Lelli Kelly. For a small place there is an exceptional number of shoes, sandals, and slippers, from tiny to larger sizes. There is also a small range of slippers for adults. Open weekdays and Sundays, but closed Monday mornings. Via dei Guibbonari 63.

Dar Filettaro. Located on Largo dei Librari ,Dar Filettaro is the closest thing to a fish and chip shop in Rome. This is one of the most unpretentious places to eat in the area, with simple, deep-fried cod being the mainstay. Reassuringly packed with locals, the prices are low, the service brusque and brief. Eat your fish with a side salad, pickled vegetables, anchovies and bread. You can also get your meal to go if you order from the back of the restaurant. Largo dei Librari 88.
