Alessandra Ferri, Boyd Gaines. This work marks not only Alessandra Ferri’s return to the stage after having said farewell to dance six years ago, it also marks her debut as choreographer. Based on a text by John Weidman and directed by Giorgio Ferrara, The Piano Upstairs combines dance and drama and stars actor Boyd Gaines, winner of three Tony Awards, on stage with the three dancers Attila Csiki, Stephen Hanna and Andrea Volpintesta. It’s the story of the collapse of a marriage described by the husband and by the wife. She recounts her version in dance, he recounts his version in a series of monologues. The stakes are raised until the story is no longer about the survival of a marriage, but about the survival of the husband and wife themselves. The music is a selection of piano works by contemporary composers, among them Arvo Part and Philip Glass. In English with Italian subtitles.
