10-16 Dec 2008. In The Nutcracker, choreography by V. Kovtum. The resident ballet company of The National Opera of Ukraine (formerly The Kiev Ballet Theatre), was established in the 1860s and soon developed a reputation for its fine ballet and opera work. Tchaikovsky insisted his operas and ballets be performed in Kiev, as he regarded the Kiev stage to be on par with those in Moscow and St Petersburg. Today there are 24 ballets in the repertory of The Kiev Ballet, which makes it one of the biggest repertories in the world.
