This is Britten’s third biblical parable for church performance after Curlew River and the Burning Fiery Furnace. It was first performed in 1968 and Britten dedicated the work to Shostakovich. In Rome it is performed at the church of S. Maria in Ara Coeli, conducted by James Conlon and directed by Mario Martone with the orchestra and chorus of the Teatro Dell’ Opera di Roma.
