Tribute to Henze

With the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di S. Cecilia and the Ensemble Strumentale della Parco della Musica Contemporanea Ensemble conducted by Tonino Battista. This event features Hans Werner Henze’s Requiem and is a homage to the composer who died in October last year. The monumental composition consists of nine movements of composite origins, but totally unified in character.

Henze, who was in his 70s when he composed the work, was deeply affected by the death of two close friends: the director of the London Sinfonietta Michael Vyner, and less than a year later, the composer Luigi Nono. In each case he began to write instrumental music which was eventually expanded into the nine movement Requiem. Finally, he received a commission for a trumpet concerto in sorrowful reaction to the first Gulf War, which also found its way into the Requiem. The result is an unusual Requiem, given the more conventional vocal, choral and usually liturgical form that the genre almost always takes. At 18.00. Auditorium Parco della Musica, Viale P. de Coubertin. For booking and information tel. 068082858, www.santacecilia.it.
