The English Theatre of Rome, in collaboration with John Cabot University's Italy Reads programme, stages Under the Overcoat, inspired by the novel The Namesake by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jhumpa Lahiri.

The story centres around the internal conflict and clashing cultural identites between Indian and American traditions, as the main protagonist Gogol struggles to accept his unusual first name.

The show's director Theodora Voutsa told Wanted in Rome "We are using the classical ancient Greek theatre structure to tell a modern story about identity, choices and consequences, through one man's journey from India of the east to America of the west."

This adaption by Alashiya Gordes, with live music by Rashmi Bhatt, is produced by Gaby Ford and the English Theatre of Rome, and Italy Reads, with the support of the embassy of the United States and the embassy of India.
