Via Katlehong Dance.
11-13 Nov 2005. In Nkululeko for Romaeuropa Festival. The choreography of the youthful South African Via Katlehong Dance company takes the rhythmical energy of the local pantsula dance tradition and mixes it with other dances from South African communities, such as gumboots (the miners' dance) and steps. This interesting dance repertory is also enriched by an original interaction with hip hop - in many aspects similar to pantsula (both are energetic, generous, playful, made up of mixed and remixed moves, and feature powerful, sensual bodies on stage), zulu dances and tap-dancing. The result is a stage performance with incredible energy and vitality. The Via Katlehong Dance (set up in 1996) is directed by Michael Moloi, Vusi Mdoyi and Steven Faleni and takes its name from the Katlehong suburb in East Rand, one of the districts that gave rise to the pantsula protest culture. Via Katlehong Dance has an educational, cultural and social mission, particularly for young people of South Africa.
