Villa Lante at Bagnaia.
Bagnaia was a hunting wood and retreat for the bishops of Viterbo until the beginning of the 16th century. In 1568 Cardinal Gambara, who was related to the Farnese family at Caprarola, commissioned Vignola to design a residence and garden.
The resulting garden has the reputation as the most beautiful of all Italian gardens, a modest scale on five levels, perfect symmetry, hundreds of variations of running water and fountains and mature trees.
The Villa Lante and the gardens are closed on Monday.
Open 8.30 until 19.30, the ticket office closes one hour before the gates close.
Tickets 2, reduced 1 for EU citizens from 18 to 25 and over 65 years of age. Free entry to those up to 18 (an identity document is required).
